ABOUT US

a legacy is not a memory

Garland & Bertha Herndon: "The best of both worlds" The foundation is named after the patriarch (Herndon) and matriarch (Scott) of the Herndon family. Garland Herndon, was the stern, devout church leader, and father of three who raised his family on land he tilled and harvested. In addition to farming, Garland worked as a truck driver, chef, carpenter, handyman, baker and general store owner.Bertha Scott Herndon was the compassionate, moral center of the family. She, too was a devout church leader who devoted her time and talents to children, both her own and others. She was a college-educated teacher who opened her home and her school to those in need - never turning anyone away. Together, Garland and Bertha made a formidable pair, both striving to uplift the community in unique ways, combining the expertise of a talented tradesman with the astuteness of a master teacher.
