My Story
Shirley Wright Herndon was born in Robeson County, North Carolina, the fifth child of Charlie and Leana Wright. Born in Lumberton, Mrs. Herndon attended North Carolina Central College where she obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Home Economics and later earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from North Carolina Central University.
She married Leon Herndon Sr. and began her career as a Home economics teacher in St. Paul’s, N.C. She and Leon eventually moved to Wake County where they raised three children and embarked on education careers with the Wake County Public School system. Shirley taught and served as an Assistant Principal at a number of schools throughout the county and retired following a 32 year career.
In retirement, Shirley became the proud co-founder of the Bright Beginnings Child Development Center. For more than 25 years, she has helped educate over 2,000 children at Bright Beginnings while mentoring countless educators who now lead in classrooms and communities across North Carolina.
Shirley has exemplified a life of compassion, generosity, and servant leadership. Through her steadfast support of White Oak Missionary Baptist Church and the White Oak Foundation, she has helped strengthen Christan education that empower individuals, support families, and provide educational opportunities for future generations.
